A New Creature

We are born into sin and it is natural that we should desire to sin; but God can take away the desire to sin and make us new again.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17; KJV)

This is a miracle, and it is very real.  You see, God does not want us to sin but he knows it is impossible for us to stop without him re-creating us. Through Jesus Christ that is exactly what he does – he re-creates us.

This is How it’s Done

Christ did not die so we could continue living in sin, but he died to take away our sin:

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. (1 John 3:4-5; ESV)

Yes, he can take away the very desire to sin and put new things in our hearts - desiring to please him and make him happy. It is important to make God happy, don’t you think?

To please him and to be made new we do things his way. He said we “must be born of the water and of the spirit” (John 3:5). We need to repent of our sins (Luke 13:3)  which is to make ourselves ready to be received by him (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). We are also baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), and become completely filled (baptized) with the Holy Spirit (yes, the Holy Spirit will speak through you in a new language when this happens) (Acts 2:1-4; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 16:17).

The Payoff

Being born again gives us access to eternal life in a world that is free of sin, pain, and death. This new world will be full of righteousness and the good things of God (Revelation 21:1-8). This is a valuable and precious promise, worth more than the entire world. To get there we must let God make us into “new creatures.”
